U Trough Screw Conveyor

A U trough screw conveyor,also known as a U-type screw conveyor,is a widely used open-type bulk material handling device,distinguished by its U-shaped trough structure that houses a rotating helical screw blade.As a common variant of screw conveyors,it is designed to transport granular,powdery,or small lumpy materials efficiently,and its open trough design makes it particularly suitable for scenarios requiring easy loading,inspection,and maintenance.

The main structure of a U trough screw conveyor comprises five key components:a U-shaped trough,a helical screw flight,a central shaft,a drive unit(including a motor and reducer),and supporting bearings.The U-shaped trough is usually made of carbon steel,stainless steel,or wear-resistant plates,with a smooth inner surface to reduce friction between materials and the trough wall.The helical screw,which is the core working part,is welded or bolted to the central shaft,and its pitch and diameter can be customized according to the type of material and conveying requirements.

Its working principle is simple and reliable.When the drive unit is started,the motor drives the reducer to rotate the central shaft and the attached helical screw.The rotating screw blade generates a forward thrust,and under the combined action of this thrust,material gravity,and frictional resistance between the material and the trough,the material moves forward along the U-shaped trough without rotating with the screw.Unlike tube screw conveyors,the open trough design allows for convenient feeding from multiple points and easy observation of the material conveying process.

U trough screw conveyors are extensively applied in industries such as agriculture,mining,construction,metallurgy,and feed processing.In agriculture,they are used to transport grain,feed,and agricultural by-products;in mining,they convey coal,ore powder,and tailings;in construction,they move sand,gravel,and cement admixtures.Their open structure also makes them ideal for scenarios where materials need to be added or removed midway during the conveying process.

The key advantages of U trough screw conveyors include simple structure,low manufacturing and maintenance costs,flexible feeding and discharging methods,and strong adaptability to different materials.However,their open design has limitations:they are not suitable for conveying toxic,volatile,or dusty materials,as these may cause environmental pollution or safety hazards.To address this,a cover can be added to the trough for partial sealing.With its practicality and cost-effectiveness,the U trough screw conveyor remains one of the most widely used conveying equipment in bulk material handling industries.
