Screw Conveyor
A screw conveyor, also known as an auger conveyor,is a versatile mechanical device widely used in bulk material handling industries to transport granular, powdery,or semi-solid materials efficiently.Derived from the ancient Archimedes’screw, this equipment has evolved into a modern essential, featuring a rotating helical screw blade(called flighting)within a trough or tube to move materials from one point to another.
The working principle of a screw conveyor is straightforward yet ingenious. When the drive device is activated, the motor drives the reducer and the screw shaft to rotate, and the helical blades welded on the shaft generate forward thrust. With the combined effect of material gravity, blade thrust, and frictional resistance from the casing, materials move forward along the trough without rotating with the screw, similar to a non-rotatable nut moving along a rotating screw.
Screw conveyors are classified into various types based on structure, conveying angle, and shape.By structure, they include shafted and shaftless models:shafted ones are suitable for dry,non-sticky materials like cement and grain, while shaftless ones are ideal for sticky or entangled materials such as sludge and garbage.By shape, they are divided into tubular and U-shaped conveyors, with tubular models offering good sealing and U-shaped ones facilitating maintenance. They can also be horizontal, inclined,or vertical, adapting to different installation spaces.
Widely applied in agriculture, chemical, construction, food, and environmental protection industries, screw conveyors play a crucial role.In agriculture, they move grain into storage bins;in construction, they transport cement and aggregates;in environmental fields, they handle municipal solid waste and sludge.Their key advantages include simple structure, low cost, good sealing(preventing dust leakage),flexible feeding and discharging positions, and easy control by adjusting the screw rotation speed.
However, they have limitations:excessive inclination reduces conveying capacity, and they are not suitable for perishable, highly viscous,or large-block materials. With the development of materials and technology, screw conveyors are moving towards large-scale,energy-saving,and intelligent directions, becoming more reliable and adaptable for diverse industrial needs.
